Dr. Robert Moore shows how pregnant women are taken care of after the upper cervical spine is addressed. This is what makes adjusting pregnant women in our office different from the rest. If you or someone you love is pregnant and would like to have a happy healthy body and baby, call our office today…

810-225-7246

All you have to lose is your pain.

Below is the original transcript:

Hi, I’m Dr. Robert Moore at Awesome Chiropractic. Today I’m going to talk to you about taking care of pregnant women and how we take care of them in our office. We have a nice pregnant lady here, six and a half months pregnant. We have this breakaway piece for the belly. She can lay here nice and comfortable. We also have a drop mechanism here to adjust the pelvis. I want to show you the pelvic adjustment. It’s very simple.

We are going to look and pump her legs a little bit and we can see that her right leg goes consistently further than the left. That means her sacrum is twisted. The sacrum attaches to the uterus in the back and the front of the uterus attaches to the pelvic rim in the front. So we want to have better alignment in the sacrum and pelvis so the baby is more comfortable and to allow the neurological expression from mom to baby to be just perfect. We are gong to adjust that real simple. We will use the just enough resistance on the table to get everything moving. We pump the legs again and we see that legs are even. That’s what we want. We want balance in that area. We now check the rest of her spine out. As the baby gets bigger, things get compressed above and below and often times it will knock a rib out – there’s a rib out here and one there.

The big thing pregnant women like is the sacral pump. I make it look simple but it’s not. I have a hard time teaching chiropractors this and an especially hard time teaching husbands this. This feels really good. This puts motion into the sacrum, it pumps the Cerebral Spinal Fluid in mom’s brain, it gets the pelvis moving. It gets everything mobile. Life is in motion. We have mobility and EVERYBODY is happier. It frees up the nervous system and we have a great day. What do you notice that’s different from your last pregnancy. She states her back hurts a lot less and she’s more comfortable. With the constant change of the baby, a comfortable, happy mom is a comfortable, happy family.

I’m Dr. Robert Moore at Awesome Chiropractic. If you have any further questions, please call our office at 810.225.7246. You can visit us on the web at www.awesomedr.com. Thank you. Have an awesome day!

Here is the transcript:

Hi, I’m Doctor Robert Moore from Awesome Chiropractic, and today we’re going to talk with you about vertigo. Vertigo is a problem a lot of people have with: dizziness, the room is spinning, some people are nauseous, some people are vomiting, there is ringing in the ears, there is a whole bunch of problems people are having with vertigo. Neither one of them is fun; it’s not a good time for people. I myself have had vertigo as a result of a concussion, and I can tell you it’s not a good time. So I want to talk with you today about vertigo and upper cervical chiropractic care. What we provide in our office.

Reasons for Vertigo:

There is several reasons people get vertigo, and one major reason in people under 50 years old is a head injury or whiplash. If you think about this. Your head is like carrying a bowling ball and in a whiplash or a head injury, you’re throwing that bowling ball in every direction. So, that causes a lot of tension on the brainstem, on the neurology, on the brain and specifically the eighth cranial nerve, the vestibular cochlear apparatus.

Some people have vertigo as a sign of severe cold or illnesses. Aging is also a factor, and that goes with the otoliths and the canals in the ears. There is also ototoxic medications, there is medication that will aggravate your inner ear, and cause a lot of problems. And there is also people who have suffered strokes. They have problems with dizziness and nauseousness, and vomiting and a lot of aggravation. There is a condition called Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, BPPV. That is a problem with the inner ear.

Vertigo and upper cervical chiropractic:

Now I want to talk with you about how upper cervical, specific upper cervical work will help people who suffer with vertigo. If you’ve had a car accident or whiplash, our specialty is the upper neck. We do a very gentle, a very specific adjustment to the upper neck, the upper cervical spine, to re-align the vertebra and allow the trauma the opportunity to heal. With the position, the malposition like this created by a whiplash or a head trauma: there is a lot of tension on the brain, on the spinal cord, the nerve roots and the blood flow to the head. We restore that balance, we restore balance to all areas of the body.

The top three nerves in your neck are in charge of the health of your head. So, if you would like to have a healthy head, a healthy eighth cranial nerve which is in charge your sense of balance, then we want to make sure that those nerves are working good. So we work on the upper cervical spine to make sure those nerves are healthy and the blood flow to the head is healthy.

People live with severe colds and allergies. That is again an immune system, Your immune system is based by your brain stem, and a misalignment, a vertebral subluxation up in here will have a negative affect on your immune system and you will have a severe cold, severe illnesses for a long period of time, and that will cause a lot of aggravation.

Aging, I’ll tell you what, aging is a factor only if you don’t take care of yourself. Aging is more a matter of how long have you been messed up?

If you’ve had strokes, I’ve taken care of quite a few people who have had strokes. The vertebral basilar artery in their head or their carotid arteries in the neck. We make sure that those arteries are working at the best of their ability, and that you have the proper amount of blood flow to the head, an that everything can be as healthy as possible inside your head.

And then the medications, the toxicity that causes the otoliths and the inner ear canals to get all messed up, that’s a whole other ball game.

We do work with ear nose and throat specialists when people have a problem with the canals and they have otoliths and the crystals in the inner ears are all messed up. We do work with those people for the Dix-hallpike testing and the Epley maneuver to restore balance to the canals, the inner ear canals.

Chiropractic, specific upper cervical chiropractic can make a big difference if you have vertigo. I’m Doctor Robert Moore, at Awesome Chiropractic. You can visit us on the web at www.awesomedr.com for more information. Better yet, call our office up, you can talk to me, you can talk to my staff. We will be more than willing to help you at 810-225-7246.

The link between migraines and infantile colic

Parents, doctors and researchers have been frustrated with the idea that colic was related to digestive irritation. Researchers have explored a number of possibilities, including allergies, lactose intolerance, an immature digestive system, maternal anxiety, and differences in the way a baby is fed or comforted. Yet it’s still unclear why some babies have colic and others don’t”.

What are the symptoms of infantile colic?

Predictable crying episodes. Babies with colic often cry about the same time every day, usually in the late afternoon or evening.

Crying time: crying episodes may last from a few minutes to three hours or more on any given day. The crying usually begins suddenly and for no clear reason.

Intense and often high pitched crying: The baby’s face may flush, and they become ver difficult to comfort.

Posture changes. Their legs curl up, they clench their fists and tense up the abdominal muscles. Some parents have noted that their baby may have a bowel movement or pass gas near the end of the colic episode.

What are the symptoms of childhood migraines?

Before the migraine occurs, subtle changes in the child’s body may show

Constipation

Some kids may experience an aura. This typically means for the next 10 to 30 minutes they may have.

Pins and needles in the arms or legs

The migraine itself may feel like:

Pain on one side of the head

Throbbing or pulsating pain

Diarrhea, blurred vision and sometimes light headedness.

Migraines typically last from 4 to 72 hours.

Who is to say that infantile colic isn’t a migraine?

Put all this information together and one may draw the conclusion that the child may be having a migraine. No one may ever know, solely because the kid can’t communicate what they are feeling.

The child is uncomfortable and all curled up in pain, they are irritable, light and sound sensitive, and have digestive aggravation. Sounds a lot like a migraine. Maybe, we should the ask parents of a colic kid, who also have a migraine sufferer in the house.

Chiropractic and infantile colic:

Throughout my years of practice I have helped many babies with colic. Or should I say many parents. I have found a correlation between the upper cervical area (the upper neck) and the sacrum. This is the group of nerves responsible for healing, digestion, immunity, growth and blood flow to the head. In a normal birth these two areas of the spine can misalign, let alone a forceps, C-section or vacuum distraction type birth.

Research has proven that chiropractic care helps kids with colic.

Chiropractic and migraine relief:

Again, I have seen numerous people who suffer from migraines do extremely well with upper cervical care. This is a specific adjustment to the upper neck, without any bending or twisting of the neck. The upper cervical spine is in charge of the health of the head and the tension inside the skull.

Neck pain is often associated with migraines. People who sit at a computer all day and have forward head posture may develop migraines. If you have ever been in a car accident and suffer from any injury, upper cervical care can help you.

Chiropractic, infantile colic and migraines:

Although no formal studies have been done (or thought of for that matter), it would be beneficial to see if a baby who is helped with colic becomes a child without migraines. This study says a baby with colic is three times more likely to have childhood migraines. One could conclude that a baby who no longer has infantile colic, should not have childhood migraines. For those families, that could be awesome news.

25 people with fibromyalgia were involved in the study, along with 10 depressed people and regular people who had no pain. Investigators found that patients with fibromyalgia had higher levels of pain than the depressed and/or normal control group of people. They also found that the fibromyalgia group had increased cold and warm detection thresholds. This indicates abnormalities of small fibers in their central nervous system (brain and spinal cord).

The study found out that the people with fibromyalgia had less unmyelinated nerve fiber bundles in their skin. The myelinated fibers (those with a coating) were normal levels.

This all points to the concept that there is a neuropathic nature of the pain associated with fibromyalgia syndrome. Meaning, if you have fibromyalgia, there is something wrong with your nerves. In the past, we knew about the nerves not functioning properly, yet this study shows the reason can be nerve damage.

How a subluxation is a factor in fibromyalgia?

There can be many ways to damage a nerve. For instance, nerve pressure from a subluxation in the spine. When a nerve is choked off, the nerve function is altered. Tissue swelling around the choked off nerve can then lead to de-myelination (like stripping the coating off a wire) and then further damage.

The study linked the increase in temperature sensation to abnormality in the central nerves (located in the spinal cord). A vertebral subluxation can cause narrowing and tension on the spinal cord itself, called spinal canal stenosis.

What about the spinothalamic tract in fibromyalgia?

What the study failed to mention was the involvement of the spinothalamic tract that relates pain and temperature information to the brain. Spinal canal stenosis caused by subluxation, disc herniation, whiplash injuries or other trauma can have a drastic affect on the spinothalamic tract. Again, the nerve damage can be related to injury or a bunch of little injuries.

Muscle pain and tension were the model for fibromyalgia.

Remember this, muscles do not work without someone (the nerves) telling them to. If we took your heart out of your body – it would stop pumping. A paralyzed person has healthy muscles, just no nerve input to those muscles.

It is easy to blame the muscle for the pain and aggravation for fibromyalgia, but that wouldn’t be accurate. This study of damaged and altered nerve function goes to prove that the problem lies with the nerve input to the muscle instead of the muscle itself.

Your body and fibromyalgia.

You were made from a one cell person only to become the big person you are today. Your brain tells your heart to beat over 90,000 times a day, and lungs to breathe over 16,000 times a day. There is a lot going on that you are not aware of. I say this because the body is smart, very smart. It uses the nervous system to control all of this stuff.

Choked off nerves and fibromyalgia.

When a nerve is choked off and damaged, the tissue it goes to malfunctions. You are reading this because of the fibromyalgia implication; but it also applies to the lungs for asthma, the digestive system for irritable bowel and everything else. Alter the nerve function and the muscles don’t work very well. That leads to a great big ouch!

From childhood we are taught that pain is the enemy. In fact, one of the most prescribed medications is some form of a pain killer. Most people believe that if they have no pain, then they must be healthy. So, let’s have a little discussion on the benefits of pain.

Pain is your friend.

Yes it may seem far fetched, but pain is something you need. Paint tells you …

When to rest

When you are over doing it

When you are doing something the body doesn’t want you to do

That something is wrong inside your body

That you need to change your way of doing things

“Pain tells you that you are alive” – from the movie GI Jane

Pain is a natural part of life

You can’t be born without pain. Pain is the first level of healing. When you break a bone, the first thing that happens is pain, then healing. Pain keeps us from doing stupid things that harm our body.

There are several types of pain.

Pain in the *&^, growing pains, little pains, big pains, heart pains, chest pains, back pains, arm pains, leg pains, head pains and the list goes on. Yet the biggest pain is the pain it takes to change and take responsibility for the things that cause our pains.

Every pain has its cause.

I have never met a pain that is caused by the lack of any pain killers. I deal daily with pains caused by body imbalance (the vertebral subluxation). If you really don’t like pain, you need to correct it at its’ cause. By the way, covering up any pain with drugs will cause greater pain in the future due to something called “side effects”.

Covering up the pain.

Most people think that they are healthy because they do not have pain, or they are on medication to cover up their pains. Being healthy and being symptom free may not be the same thing. The pains of illness keep us from pushing our body beyond the point of no return. When we cover up our pains, we then go beyond our abilities and cause further damage to our body. You see the truth about pain is, it is a natural thing we should respect.

So, what can we do to correct our pain?

First of all, we need to make sure we are giving our body the best tools for health care. In our office we promote the DREAM Principle of: Diet, Rest Exercise, Adjustments and Mindset. In order, to heal, we need to rebuild our body, which is where the DREAM principle comes in. Good food, proper rest, exercise to stimulate strength, adjustments to restore body balance, and a great mental attitude, give us the proper tools to rebuild our body into a new healthy body.

Body balance restores proper function, and when we function properly we do not have pain. After all, pain just tells us that we aren’t functioning properly.

Spending time to heal is an investment in your future. Pain simply tells you that your portfolio of care is not returning any dividends. If you are still in pain (or don’t know you are), it is time to change what you are doing, it’s not working.

Please do not let another day go by that someone you know and love is in pain and doesn’t understand what it is and what to do about it. Tell them that they have a choice.

At Awesome Chiropractic, Dr. Robert Moore specializes in the specific correction of upper cervical subluxations. We use detailed analysis and digital x-rays to pinpoint the most specific way to restore balance to the spine and spinal cord. There is no bending or twisting of the neck.

If you suffer from any pain and would like to see how specific upper cervical chiropractic care can help you, call our office today (810) 225-7246. We would be glad to provide you with a free consultation to see how we can help you.

The meninges are the tissue that holds your brain in place and keeps it from knocking against your skull. It is made up of the dura, arachnoid and pia matter. The Dura Matter has a lot of blood vessels running through it and is very sensitive to pain. The dura extends into the spinal canal and protects the spinal cord. Any twisting or torsion of the dura shows up as a headache.

The back of your eye is attached to the dura. As the dura starts to twist it pulls on the eye. That makes a lot of sense to a headache sufferer, because they often can feel the headache coming on by how their eyes feel.

2. Blood supply and headaches

The brain and meninges are supplied with oxygen and nutrients from the internal carotid, vertebral basilar and external carotid arteries. If those arteries are constricted or dilated at the wrong time, a headache results. Meningeal blood vessels are very sensitive to pain. It is generally recognized that the development of headaches depends upon the activation of these sensitive nerves.

The blood supply to the head is regulated by the top 3 nerves in the neck. Any misalignment to the upper neck can affect the overall health of the head. Sometimes an unhealthy head is called a headache.

3. Trigeminal Autonomic Reflex and headaches

Dilated meningeal blood vessels send pain signals to the brain through a branch of nerves from the Trigeminal Nerve. These nerves travel through the Trigeminal Ganglion and connect in the neck. Nerves then send signals to the thalamus and higher brain centers where they are perceived as pain.

The Trigeminal Nucleus is in both the skull and spinal cord. Again, any misalignment to the upper neck can have a negative affect on the way those nerves work and feel.

4. Facial Nerve and headaches

Similar to the Trigeminal nerve, the Facial nerve has synapses in the cervical region of the spine. All sensory nerves of pain to the face synapse in the Trigeminal Nucleus we talked about above.

5. Cerebral Spinal Fluid and headaches

CSF is made in your brain, travels through sinuses protected by the dura mater, through the spine and back into the brain to run off into the jugular vein (why do you think vampires like to bite your neck).

Any interruption in the flow of the CSF can result in a pressure backup and irritate the dura matter and all the sensitive nerves in the head. Upper cervical alignment is key to proper CSF flow.

In each of the above causes of headaches, there is one common denominator. The upper cervical spine.

A subluxation of the top vertebrae of the neck can:

Cause tension and torsion on the meninges.

Cause changes in blood pressure and size of blood vessels in the head

Interfere with nerve input and output of the Trigeminal Nerve.

Interfere with nerve input and output of the Facial Nerve.

Impair normal CSF flow throughout the head and spine.

Specific upper cervical chiropractic adjustments can help people with headaches:

Restore balance to the meninges that cover and protect the brain and spinal cord.

Enable proper function of the nerves that control blood flow to the head.

Take pressure away from the Trigeminal Nucleus of the spine.

Restore proper sensory nerve input from the face to the brain.

Allow the CSF to flow properly and avoid any pressure back ups.

Recently, a patient came in and told me that he was having trouble getting a full breath. After looking at how he was breathing, I saw that he was a chest breather. Here are some breathing tips to help get that full breath and use your diaphragm to complete that breath.

Understanding the breathing cycle:

Inhaling is due to the contraction and flattening of the diaphragm, this creates a vacuum pressure in the chest and causes the lungs to expand and inflate. The diaphragm is located between your chest and your abdomen.

When the body is in need of more oxygen, abdominal muscles tighten and expansion of the lungs is resisted. The increased abdominal pressure causes the diaphragm to tilt and the ribcage moves upwards with an increase in volume and the entry of air.

In a relaxed exhale, the diaphragm relaxes and air leaves due to the elasticity of the lungs. This relaxed breathing uses very little energy.A forced exhale comes from forcing the abdominal muscles downward on the rib cage. This force increases pressure on the airways, possibly causing narrowing and wheezing.

Intercostal muscles hold an auxiliary function. They help stiffen and shape the rib cage as we breathe.

Breathing is one of many automatic functions of the body that for the most part take place in the background, outside of conscious thought. Scientists have long known that automatic breathing activity is centered in the brainstem.

Diaphragmatic breathing tips:

As you may have noticed, the diaphragm is a major part of breathing. Just ask any singer, actor or orator. Learning how to use your diaphragm properly can help you get that full breath of air.

First of all, you need to see and feel the diaphragm in action. Here are some breathing tips to become more aware of your diaphragm…

Hand on heart, hand on belly breathing tip:

Stand in front of a mirror. Put one hand on your chest and the other on your belly. As you take a breath in, notice which hand moves first. If you belly hand moves first, then you are using your diaphragm. As you exhale, your belly should also move.

If your chest hand moves first, you are using your chest and ribs. This is the most in-efficient way to breathe. Work hard to get your belly hand to move.

Panting breathing tip:

Panting will help you isolate your diaphragm and get the feeling of where it is. Just pant for about 5 to 10 seconds. No need to hyperventilate. Putting your hand on your belly will also help you feel the diaphragm in action.

Humming breathing tip:

I have found that humming really accentuates feeling the diaphragm and abdominal muscles involved in breathing. Feeling your diaphragm will help you use your diaphragm.

Researches link brain function to breathlessness:

Researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center say they have located key circuits in the brain that activate when the body begins to feel short of breath. The findings should lead to a better understanding of diseases like panic disorder, asthma and congestive heart failure, in which anxiety and stress worsen the feelings of breathlessness.

The scientists say that conscious breathing is controlled by 3 centers in your brain: the amygdala, cerebellum and anterior cingulate cortex. So, your emotional state can have a big affect on your breathing. These three breathing tips can actually help relax your brain and let it automatically get back into the swing of things.

Our best breathing tip:

What I have found in my office is that an upper cervical subluxation can cause severe aggravation of the brainstem and create a stress response stimulating higher brain breathing centers to become involved. People with COPD, asthma and other breathing problems can benefit from an Awesome Upper Cervical Chiropractic Adjustment. Being an ex-asthmatic, I know that I did.

Call our office today to see if we are a fit for you (810) 225-7246. All you have to lose is your problem.
