Sciatica

Sciatica is the pain someone feels in the lower back, buttocks, or parts of the leg and foot.  The pain may be severe and accompanied by muscle weakness, numbness, pins and needles or tingling, and finally to add insult to injury; difficulty moving or controlling the leg itself.  These symptoms are often felt on only one side of the body.  Thankfully, there is an answer to the sciatic problem.

Sciatica is caused by the compression and/or irritation of spinal nerve roots that make up the sciatic nerve (L3, L4, L5, S1, S2 or S3), or by compression of the sciatic nerve itself on the right or left side.

What can cause this compression?  Spinal disc bulges, herniations and degeneration, vertebral subluxations, spondylolisthesis and spinal stenosis.  Sciatica can also be caused by a car accident or other trauma.  These choke off the nerve root as it exits the spinal cord and joins to make the sciatic nerve.  This type of pain is often referred to as radiculopathy.

The nerve can also be compressed as it travels along the leg, as is the case of someone with Piriformis Syndrome.  Instead of running beneath the piriformis muscle, some people have it running through it or under it.  When the muscle is shortened or strained, it “entraps” the sciatic nerve.  Men, who sit on a wallet, may experience this problem.

Being pregnant can also irritate the sciatic nerve.  The unborn baby may compress on the nerve and irritate the mom.  An adjustment, work wonders for this.

Enough of the problem, what about the solution?

The adjustment is extremely important in a case of sciatica.  It is our opinion that the cause of disc bulges, herniations and degeneration that compresses the nerve; is the vertebral subluxation.  Our specific adjustments target any area of misalignment along the spine and correct them, allowing the nerve the chance to work properly.  Restoring balance to a severely unbalanced body is vital.

In cases of spondylolisthesis and spinal stenosis causing compression on the nerve roots.   The specific adjustment can once again restore balance and bring maximum function to an already compromised area.

Pregnant women and men who sit upon their wallets can be helped by keeping the pelvis and lower spine mobile and balanced.  A mobile pelvis keeps the baby comfortable and happy.  Just ask my wife.

If you have been in a car accident or been injured some other way.  It is extremely important to restore the balance to the spine and nerve roots.  You will be happy that you did.
